Fitness is a key ingredient in a healthy, balanced lifestyle. Some of us exercise to stay trim, some to relieve stress, and some just so we can get more delicious ‘cheat’ meals in! Either way, it’s always better to keep moving than to be sedentary.
No matter what your preference, there’s something out there to suit everyone and keep us all in great physical shape. Whether you like to lift heavy objects, seek that runners’ high, or release your inner downward dog, as long as you’re enjoying it, it’s the perfect workout.
But of course, we all love a good vacation. From basic road-trips to all-inclusive getaways, travel can be a perfect opportunity to spoil yourself with food, drinks, and relaxation. This sounds amazing (and truly, it is), but if we want to avoid that post-travel regret and feeling sluggish and heavy, then we should make an effort to be physically active for a bit of time each day. This will help energize you, make you feel revitalized, help with that hangover from last night, and let you feel less guilty about indulging at the buffet 😉
The simple options are to walk or ride a bike to as many places as you can, and to take stairs instead of elevators and escalators. But for some who are used to more physical activity in a day, that just won’t cut it. Hence, my list of favorite apps for travel fitness. These can of course be used while you’re stationed at home base, but the big pluses of these programs is the lack of necessary equipment, the minimal space requirement, and the audio prompts. Hopefully you are inspired to give some of these a try, and maybe you’ll fall for them as hard as I have!
Map My Run ~ Cardio Fitness
This is a great one for all you quick footed folks. Discover running routes that have been designed by other users, or create your own. Using your computer or phone’s GPS, you can map out a route, or you can just start running and have it track your duration, distance, pace, speed, elevation, calories burned, and route traveled on an interactive map. Analyze your performance, connect with wearable gear, be part of a running community from anywhere. This one also has sister apps, including Map My Hike, Map My Walk, and the MapMyRun Trainer.
Works with iPhone, Apple Watch, and Android.
Cost is $Free, with optional paid upgraded versions.
Pocket Yoga ~ Namaste Fitness
Pocket Yoga (and the Pocket Yoga Builder app – CAD $13.99) is my long-time favorite app. It provides three different flows, each with three levels of difficulty and three durations to choose from. With Pocket Yoga you can keep up with your practice at your own pace in the comforts of your own home, or hotel room, or beach, etc… Simply roll out your mat, or don’t, place your device in front of you, and Pocket Yoga will guide you through your entire session. Track your progress, see your heart rate and calories burned, and earn “karma points” to unlock new environments.
Works with iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac, Android, and Windows 8.
Cost is CAD $3.99.
7 MWC ~ Speedy Fitness
No equipment required! This quick and simple workout challenge will get your heart rate up and your muscles toned. Similar to a High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) or Tabata style workout, you’ll perform 12 exercises for 30 seconds each, with a 10 second rest in between. Do a couple rounds back-to-back for a more complete workout, or do one 7 minute session that still achieves the equivalent of an hour’s workout! The workout effectively increases your metabolism, so the benefit is in effect throughout the day. This program instructs you during the workout, with in-app (no wi-fi required) video demos, and tracks your results along the way.
Works with iPhone, iPad, and Android.
Cost is CAD $2.99.
Jefit ~ Gym Fitness
While there are some body-weight exercises available in Jefit, this one is definitely more gym-themed. I love this one while I’m not traveling, it’s great to use at your local gym. But also, with most hotels and resorts having their own gyms now, this one is still great for away from home workouts! With over 1300+ unique exercises with descriptions and animations, and the ability to create personal workout routines and daily fitness plans, track body statistics, view workout progress, add friends, and interact with the community for motivation – you won’t feel intimidated again!
Works with iPhone, iPad, and Android.
Cost is $Free, with optional paid upgraded version.
